Respect.

Respect they say is reciprocal. And it is also advised that the young ones respect the older ones. I will be direct with this thought as it gives me a tough time wrapping my head around it.

At the end of this post, I will like to read what your thought of what respect should be?

So, there was this day I heard my neighbour calling out his young daughter who replied as 'YES?' and the father reprimanded her saying, 'You should say SIR?'.

Then I've got my mom who if she calls her grandkids or anyone older calls them and replies 'Yes?', then there will be a lecture for that day.

Let me also give a personal scenario.

There's someone I grew up respecting, like valid respect and I still do but there were times I felt this person didn't get my view and I just want to stand up to him and explain myself but I just hold back and say, 'that will be disrespectful'.

So, my thoughts are?

  • Can I confront someone I respect?
  • Does being older make you 'respect worthy'?
  • That I don't add a title of Sir/Ma/Dr/Pastor, etc to your name makes me disrespectful?
  • That I tell you a NO makes me disrespectful?
  • And is it possible to respect someone younger or of the same age group?

Cos in all honesty, I feel the concept of Respect is not well spelt out in this part of our world.

Let me crack you up a little.

So, my pastor, the Overseer of my church, celebrated his 50th birthday a couple of weeks ago and my niece, Dr. T did a video singing a birthday song for him. At the end of the video, Dr. T went ahead to say 'Happy Birthday Pastor Olumide Emmanuel…'

Her grandma, my mother, watched the video and felt it was disrespectful for a 9+ years old girl to, in her words, 'la oruko mo won lori' (for the non Yorubas who may read this, it means - hit his name on his head… lol… literally means addressing him by his name). Grandma expected Dr. T to say 'Happy Birthday My Pastor' without including his name. As per say I was there, I replied to her that, isn't that his name?

Then my turn to make a video came and I made the error of calling all his full names, dear lovelies, that video didn't see the light of day. Just one did and it wasn't even used.

So, if you have answers to my thoughts, something that can clarify what Respect truly is, please feel free to share in the comment section below or in my DM.

+Don't forget to CLAP. You are my MUSE.
